Work place violence is not something that the average worker thinks about on a regular basis. In fact, workplace violence is something you probably shrug off and don’t even realize how often it really happens. The fact of the matter is that can and does happen, and that is frightening. No person involved in a business from the company owner to the interns is immune to this.
Data found by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) and reported on by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); homicides in the workplace average 700 per year. “From 2003 to 2012 over half of the workplace homicides occurred within three occupation classifications: sales and related occupations (28%), protective service occupations (17%), and transportation and material moving occupations (13%).”
These statistics are especially startling for small business owners who think that workplace violence can’t happen to them, because they work in smaller situations and have a more personal connection with their employees. But this is in fact not the case.
No matter how big or how small your company is you must be prepared for all types of violence, but you must especially be prepared for violence against yourself and your workers. Don’t believe that it can’t happen to you because it can, and in too many instances, it does.
