Here’s How Security Guards Help in Emergency Situation

Security guards can (and do) help during emergency situations. While guards are primarily known for protecting people, places and property, they also respond to emergencies, sometimes in the role of first responders.

Typically, if an emergency occurs while a security guard is on duty then he or she will alert authorities to come and help– calling the police or fire department, for instance. The guard will help coordinate their efforts on-site, acting as a liaison between those experiencing the emergency and those who respond to it. Oftentimes, security guards are also in charge of managing crowds and/or coordinating evacuations when emergencies occur. They might also be in charge of safeguarding assets (especially valuable ones) during an emergency.

Security guards are usually prepared to deal with emergencies thanks to continuous training over time. Meanwhile, while on duty they are ever-vigilant, looking for situations that are out-of-the-ordinary and may require assistance from medical personnel or law enforcement agencies. Guards may assist in emergency planning sessions at certain places, as well as conduct risk assessments. On occasion, they might need to use their first aid and CPR training to assist people who’ve been hurt or are unconscious.

In order to “be in charge” when there’s an emergency, security guards need to not only assess a situation, figuring out its severity and risks, but also be able to make informed and decisive decisions as to what to do about the problem(s). Oftentimes, this calls for rather immediate actions, so guards must be on alert at all times, just in case something bad happens.
